According to history our islands have been known for our innovative artist community since the 60’s.and considering the number of working artists who reside here, that designation is well-deserved.

On the first Friday of every month, all of the galleries and art centers -- and there are many -- open their doors for the festive opening of a new show. Main Street (officially mapped as Vashon Highway SW) is alive with adults and kids strolling from opening to opening. Wine and cheese are almost as abundant as the wonderful creative works that grace walls and floor spaces at every turn, mostly the work of local artists.

Music and musicians flourish here as well. Theatre, dance, writing, a new generation of graphic and computer artists -- all are embraced with enthusiasm by islanders. We are proud of our artistic tradition and eager to share it with you.

We are also determined to maintain Vashon-Maury as one of the few places remaining in America where an artist can afford to do his or her work and live a comfortable life in the bargain. Your support as a visitor to and maybe even a patron of our art community can help us make that worthwhile aspiration a continuing reality.
